One sector which has seen a boom in interest over the last few weeks has been cruising and more specifically cruises around the UK which has since been referred to as ‘Seacations’. As many people have decided to stay within the UK again this summer, a Seacation gives an alternative option to stay on land – especially when at the most popular times of the year destinations such as Devon or Cornwall are already extremely busy.
The government has confirmed domestic UK cruises can restart again on May 17, the same date as international travel has been penciled in. However, until the full unlock date of June 21 there are conditions which the cruise lines have to adhere to, including:
- The number of passengers onboard will be capped at 1,000 – or half the ship’s designed capacity (whichever is fewer), with the emphasis on it enabling easier social distancing onboard.
- The same COVID protocols and guidelines will apply on both land and sea – so groups won’t be able to mix in groups larger than six, or two households – this is regardless or not if booked as one large group.
- Until June 21, cruises will only be allowed to dock within the UK and the Common Travel Area – which includes the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Ireland, although local travel restrictions may still apply.
- International cruises will take place after June 21, in line with the government’s ambition to remove restrictions on social contact.
There are already a large number of cruises departing around the UK this summer, some like Saga are already nearly completely full – and we’re also seeing new cruise lines head for the UK waters for the first time, like Tradewind Voyages and Virgin Voyages at completely different ends of the spectrum.
